Do you listen to the radio? I wake up to Radio 4, listen to 6 Music at my desk and switch to 1Extra if I fancy a dance around. Its something that we pretty much take for granted. If we don’t like a song we switch channels to find something else. But, radio is a much more important medium for people in more remote or oppressed areas of the world.

February 13th sees the celebration of World Radio Day. Celebrated every year it “seeks to raise awareness about the importance of the radio to facilitate access to information, freedom of expression and gender equality”. The date was chosen to mark the day that United Nations Radio was established in 1946. In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly voted to endorse World Radio Day as a UN International Day, cementing its position as a major global celebration for years to come.

For more information on this years theme of ‘Youth Radio’ visit the World Radio Day website by clicking here. They say:

“World Radio Day is about celebrating radio, why we love it and why we need it today more than ever. A day to remember the unique power of radio to touch lives and bring people together across every corner of the globe.”
